Plantons la vigne (also known as La vigne au vin) is a French dance and harvest song which dates back to at least the 16th century.

The story of the song

La Vigne au vin is a very old folk song that seems to originate from the Champagne region. It was made popular from 1892 onwards in the cabarets of Montmartre by Aristide Bruant (1851-1925).

The song tells of a journey that begins with the earth, passes through the harvesting of the grapes, which become wine, which goes into jugs, is drunk, disposed of and returns to the earth after urination.

Wine songs

Wine is present in a multitude of songs: in drinking songs and in songs of everyday life, those that reflect the work of the winegrower, evoke his difficulties, speak of the joy of the drinker and the places where he goes.

Songs have always accompanied wine. It gives rhythm to the grape harvest or the work in the cellar. In turn, wine gives birth to song by stimulating inspiration.
