Ne pleure pas Jeannette (Don't cry, Jeannette) is an ld French tune whose authors are unknown.

It is a version of one of the oldest French songs, "la Pernette se lève", dating from the late Middle Ages (15th century).

The story of the song

Ne pleure pas Jeannette is perhaps the saddest of children's rhymes.

Jeannette is a young girl in love with her Pierre but he is in prison. Her parents want to marry her off to a prince or a baron, but this decision makes her unhappy. Her heart belongs to Pierre and to no one else.

She asks to be hanged with her soul mate to avoid this sad fate. This is done at the end of the song:

"And Pierre was hanged. And his Jeannette with him".
