Since we arrived in Provence, we've climbed up to the hilltop village of Bonnieux several times. We prefer to do our walks in Bonnieux in the morning, when the temperatures are still fairly cool, as climbing up to the upper church (église haute) requires a certain amount of physical effort!
Here are a few photos taken during these walks to arouse your interest in spending a few days in Bonnieux.
Our Morning Walks in Bonnieux
Our accommodation is a 15-20 minute walk from the bottom of the village. As Bonnieux is a village that follows the slope of the hill, we preferred to take the car to the car park near the lower church and continue up the hill on foot.
A challenging climb
Our morning walks in Bonnieux are a great way to get some exercise!. Indeed, the climb from the lower village to the upper village is considered challenging by many unaware visitors. Steep alleys, staircases, vaulted passages... don't come here in high heels or flip-flops!
Little by little, the red-tiled roofs of the village come into view.
A spectacular view from the top
Once at the top, you are rewarded with one of the most beautiful views in the Luberon.
It would be best if you got there in the morning when the sun is at its best.
You can see the valley of the River Calavon and the hilltop villages of Lacoste, Goult, Gordes and Roussillon. On the horizon are the Monts de Vaucluse and, beyond them, the iconic Mont Ventoux.
