My First Visit to Paris

July 1997. My brother and I were on our way to England. From Mulhouse in Alsace, our train journey took us to the Gare de l'Est in Paris, where we had to go to the Gare du Nord to catch the Eurostar to London before heading further south to Brighton.

We had a 4-hour wait in Paris. It was my first time in Paris, and my childhood dream was to see the Eiffel Tower.

I couldn't see myself spending those hours waiting in the corridors of a Paris station.

So my brother and I decided to take the métro to the Trocadero to admire the Eiffel Tower.

Finally, my childhood dream was coming true. I was so excited!

There's a (Paris) snag!

On paper, it may seem like a wonderful adventure, but the reality was quite different.

Because I neglected to describe the (minor) nightmare that awaited us in the Parisian transport system.

Oh, it wasn't so much the métro that was a problem. We hadn't travelled during rush hour, and the métro wasn't crowded.

The problem was our suitcases!

The legendary stairs of the Paris métro!

You see, the Paris métro has many stations with stairs, and only some of them have lifts or escalators.

Going up and down the stairs with our heavy suitcases was exhausting and difficult.

To reach the Trocadéro from Gare de l'Est, we had to take line 4 and then line 6, connecting at Montparnasse-Bienvenüe station. The connection between the métro lines at Montparnasse meant a long walk. With our bulky suitcases, these journeys between platforms were quite stressful and time-consuming.

Finally, once in the métro carriage, there was no space to safely store our large suitcases during the journey, unlike long-distance trains.

Everything was new to us since we had never been to Paris, let alone taken the metro.

Looking back, I smile at our first adventure.

My gosh, I remember been exhausted on the train to London.

Reasons for Luggage Storage in Paris

Here are seven scenarios where you might consider using a luggage storage service in Paris:

Reason #1 Early arrival or late departure

If you arrive in Paris before your check-in time or have a late flight out, you may need a place to store your luggage until you can access your accommodation or head to the airport. Luggage storage services allow you to drop off your bags and explore the city without being burdened by carrying them around.

Reason #2 Exploring Paris before check-in or after check-out

Sometimes, you may have a few hours to spare before you can check into your accommodation or after you've checked out, but you still want to make the most of your time in Paris. Storing your luggage allows you to roam the city freely, visit attractions, or enjoy a leisurely meal without worrying about dragging your bags.

Reason #3 Short layover or transit

(This is the scenario my brother and I were in).

If you have a layover in Paris and want to explore the city, a luggage storage service can be a convenient option. You can securely store your bags while you venture out, visit famous landmarks, grab a bite to eat, and return to the airport in time for your onward flight.

Reason #4 Visiting attractions or museum

Many attractions and museums in Paris restrict bringing large bags inside or limited storage facilities. In such cases, using a luggage storage service nearby allows you to store your bags safely while you enjoy your visit without any worries.

Reason #7 Taking day trips from Paris

Paris is an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions like Versailles, Giverny, or Fontainebleau. When embarking on a day trip, travelling light's often more convenient. Storing your more oversized luggage securely allows you to pack only the essentials for your day trip, making your excursion more comfortable and hassle-free.
