J'ai un gros nez rouge is a cheerful French nursery rhyme with lyrics dating from the 20th century.

About the song

This cheerful nursery rhyme, (literally: "I have a big red nose") is sung while gesturing to describe a clown. This nursery rhyme helps develop memory, colour distinction, and teaches children to communicate through body gestures (see below).

The author-composer of this rhyme is Jean Naty-Boyer (1932-2013). He is the author of numerous melodies for children (more than 400 songs).

The lyrics in French

The original song of J'ai un gros nez rouge has 1 verse.

Couplet

J'ai un gros nez rouge
Deux traits sur les yeux
Un chapeau qui bouge
Un air malicieux
Deux grandes savates
Un grand pantalon
Et quand je me gratte
Je saute au plafond

Translation of the lyrics into English

Here is an approximative translation into English:

Verse

I have a big red nose
Two lines on my eyes
A hat that moves
A cheeky look
Two big shoes
A big pair of pants
And when I scratch myself
I jump to the ceiling

The gestures of the song

J'ai un gros nez rouge
Deux traits sur les yeux
Un chapeau qui bouge

Un air malicieux

Deux grandes savates
Un grand pantalon

Et quand je me gratte
Je saute au plafond

(put a hand in front of the nose)
(index fingers in front of the eyes)
(the hands, on each side of the head, pretend to move a hat)
(with the thumb and the index finger, the hands extend the mouth)
(hands pretend to extend the feet)
(hands pretend to pull and spread the sides of the pants)
(hands scratch the armpits)
(jump as high as you can)
