There’s always something new to discover, whether a hidden café or a stunning view.

10 Most Beautiful Country Towns in Provence

The small towns of Provence have been drawing visitors for almost a century with their unique charm and beauty.

Whether nestled in the hills and mountains of the Alpilles and the Luberon, set amidst the lush vineyards of the Vaucluse, or even along the picturesque coast, these towns are truly special.

In these small towns, you’ll find the real spirit of Provence.

The terracotta roofs sit at quirky angles on stone and plaster houses.

In quiet squares, tall plane trees provide cool, deep shade, and the soothing sound of water from old fountains fills the air.

My Selection of the 10 Country Towns in Provence

Choosing just ten country towns in Provence was no easy task.

The region is filled with countless picturesque and charming localities, each with a unique appeal.

However, I had to narrow it down, making some difficult decisions.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it highlights some of my favourites.

For this selection, I have focused on towns within the départements of Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhône.

These are the places that, for me, truly capture the essence and beauty of Provence.

 

1. Arles

Arles is a town brimming with history and culture.

Famous for its Roman monuments, including the impressive amphitheatre, Arles is a treat for history lovers.

Stroll through the town’s streets, and you’ll find charming squares, lively markets, and cafés where you can relax and watch the world go by.

The town’s vibrant arts scene, inspired by Van Gogh, who lived here, adds to its unique appeal.

2. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

It’s the place that comes to mind when you think of charming country towns in Provence.

Its narrow streets are lined with boutique shops and cosy cafés.

The weekly market is a must-visit, offering fresh produce and local crafts.

Don’t miss the ancient Roman ruins of Glanum and the beautiful Saint-Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh stayed.

3. Tarascon

Tarascon is a hidden gem with a rich medieval past.

The imposing Château de Tarascon overlooks the Rhône River, offering stunning views and a glimpse into history.

For Nyons, we make a little detour to the Drôme départment.

Here, in Drôme Provençale, the town is known as the “olive capital” of France, and its olive groves are a sight to behold.

Nyons has a lovely Provençal feel with its old stone houses and shaded squares.

Visit the bustling market to taste some local olive oil and other delicacies.

6. Vaison-la-Romaine

8. Pernes-les-Fontaines

Pernes-les-Fontaines is a town of fountains – there are over 40 of them!

This quaint town invites you to explore its charming streets and discover these beautiful water features.

9. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a paradise for antique lovers and market enthusiasts.

Known as the “Venice of Provence” because of its canals, this town has a unique charm.

The Sunday market is a major attraction, offering antiques, food, and local products.

Stroll along the water’s edge, enjoy a coffee by the river, and explore the many shops and galleries.

10. Apt

Apt is the least loved by tourists, who prefer the perched villages of the Luberon.

However, the old town has hidden treasures, such as the cathedral, the fortified gate, and discreet squares.

The old town is a maze of narrow streets and hidden spots.

Visit the Saturday market to sample local delicacies and soak up the atmosphere.

The stunning views of the Luberon hills and the rich history make Apt a delightful place to visit.
