Australia Day is the country’s largest annual public event, celebrated on the 26th of January throughout the Great South Land.
A word about Australia Day
Australia Day takes place on the 26th of January, which marks the anniversary of the First Fleet’s arrival at Sydney Cove in 1788. On that day, Governor Arthur Phillip raised the flag of Great Britain in what is now known as Sydney, Australia.
Today, Australia Day is the official national day of the country and the occasion for celebrations reflecting the nation’s diverse society and landscape.
Many events are run throughout the country, including community and family gatherings, picnics and barbecues, local community awards and citizenship ceremonies welcoming immigrants into the Australian community.
The beauty of Australia is well sung in the following video by Troy Cassar-Daley, one of the most popular modern country musicians in Oz:
For Australia Day, we have asked our French native teachers, Élodie and Juliette, to write a few words about their first impressions when arriving in Australia, which can be read on our French blog.
If you are reading these lines and are living Down Under, we wish you a happy Australia Day!
