2015 World War 1 Armistice Day in Maisons-Laffitte

Today is a public holiday in France as the country remembers those who fought and fall during World War I nearly a century ago. We attended the local ceremony organised in our town of Maisons-Laffitte.

This morning as we headed for ‘le marché du mercredi‘, we stumbled upon the ceremony organised for the World War I Armistice Day. At the same time a similar ceremony was organised in Paris under the Arc de Triomphe in the presence of the President of the French Republic and his government.

With a profusion of French and international flags and gerbes (flowers), the ceremony in our town was attended by the local officials, soldiers, young and old. A band was playing military tunes including La Marseillaise, France’s national anthem.
